Abundance of fixtures highlighted by Schools and European Race Walking Cup

The summer season gets into full flow this week with an abundance of fixtures on the calendar.

Domestically the schools provincial championships take place with the Irish Life Health Leinster, Munster and Connacht Schools Track and Field Championships, along with the Milk It Ulster Schools.

Internationally there is a strong Irish team lead by Robert Heffernan (Togher) for the European Race Walking Cup on Sunday in Podebrady, Czech Republic. On Saturday night some of Ireland’s leading long distance runners compete at the Highgate Harriers 10,000m. The Halle International Throws meet also takes place on Sunday.

There were a number of good results last weekend. Some leading results from the weekend include:

Adam McMullen (Crusaders) 7.85m long jump in Florida
British Milers Club, Solihull
Emma Mitchell (Queens) 15:50.55 5,000m for a new Northern Ireland record and tops the Irish rankings list this outdoor season.
There were also four European U20 standards

  •  Alex O’Neill (St Cronan’s) 2:09.53 800m
  • Darragh McElhinney (Bantry) 3:49.32 1500m
  • Charlie O Donovan (Leevale) 3:49.79 1500m
  • Jodie McCann (DSD) 4.26.83 1500m

Ton Le Gaoithe

The Irish U20 4x100m men’s and women’s teams clocked European standards running 41.20 and 46.09 respectively
