Brunell and Mystics book spots in Hula Hoops National Cup semi-finals

Singleton SuperValu Brunell and NUIG Mystics join DCU Mercy in the Hula Hoops Women’s National Cup semi-finals in January after thrilling wins over Maxol WIT Wildcats and Portlaoise Panthers respectively this afternoon.
For Mystics, it was game two of their Cup journey, having won out the preliminary round in overtime against IT Carlow Basketball on Thursday evening, and they certainly enjoy living on the edge as their clash with Portlaoise Panthers this afternoon also went to overtime.

“My head is ready to spin off with overtime at this stage!” laughed a relieved head coach Mike Murray after the game. “That was a massive win for the girls. The League wasn’t going so well for us and we were losing close games, then all of a sudden, we close out two overtime games and we’re in the semi-finals of the Cup so this is huge and I think we deserve to be here, we’ve been working really hard.

“It takes a bit of guts to finish out games like today and our Irish players are really doing the business for us.”
Brunell meanwhile saw off the challenge of Wildcats for the second time in as many weeks in Cork today, with Breana Bey bagging 26 points to help her side to victory.

“I’m very happy with the result, and happy enough with the performance,” said Brunell’s Francis O’Sullivan. “We gave up 41 points in the first half, which was way too many, so we knuckled down defensively in the second half and there were some wonderful performances. We move on now to the Cup semi-final, which is huge. We’ve now qualified for the Women’s Cup, the Under 18 Cup and we’re hoping to have our Under 20s there too, so it’s huge for the club.”
In the President’s Cup quarter finals meanwhile, two Cork and two Kerry teams have made it through to the Hula Hoops Cup semi-finals, with Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin maintaining their unbeaten run so far this season with a win over Paris Texas Kilkenny, while Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney caused upset in Cork by running out 85-92 point winners over Fr Mathews. Elsewhere, Ballincollig overcame Portlaoise Panthers 83-66, while Gamefootage.net Titans conceded their quarter-final clash with Neptune to put the Cup holders through to the semi-finals.

There were big celebrations in Donegal this afternoon meanwhile as newcomers to the League and Cup competition this year, Fabplus North West, caused a massive upset in their quarter-final battle, winning out 69-56 over an experienced UL Huskies side.

“We are so happy with our win this afternoon,” said coach, Paul McDevitt. “It was a tight game, but the girls came good. Now we’re looking forward to our first ever Cup semi-final in January.”
