IRISH TEAM TRAVEL TO ROTTERDAM FOR JUNIOR/U23/SENIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 20TH AUGUST 2016
Rowing Ireland are delighted to announce their team who will compete at the World Junior U23 and Senior Championships In William Baan Rotterdam from 21st to 28th August. The team left Cork on Friday 19th August from Cork Airport and will return on Sunday 28th August.
The combined World Rowing Junior, Under 23 and Senior Championships starts on 21 August in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. With nearly 1900 entries from 70 countries, the programme is jam-packed.
Two medallists from 2015 will line up in the lightweight men’s single sculls: Rajko Hrvat, the silver medallist from Slovenia, and Milos Stanojevic, Serbia’s bronze medallist. Rio Olympian Paul O’Donovan of Ireland has travelled straight from Brazil to Rotterdam. Paul won silver in the lightweight double sculls with his brother Gary in Rio, and set a gold standard for interviewing skills in the process!
Paul’s coach, Dominic Casey, who guided the O’ Donovan’s to Olympic glory, is coaching the Junior women’s team of Aoife Casey and Emily Casey as well as Paul at the Championships. Skibbereen has 5 rowers representing Ireland in Rotterdam, with Shandon, Clonmel, UCD, UCC, NUIG, Portadown and Belfast also sending athletes.
