Michelle Payne, first female jockey to win Melbourne Cup

Michelle Payne is the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup, riding the 100 to 1 outsider Prince of Penzance to victory with the help of her strapper brother Stevie. The 30 year old Australian is the youngest of ten and has ridden Prince of Penzance from the very start of it’s career. In 2004 and 2012 Michelle suffered some bad falls and considered retiring.

Just three years on, Michelle Payne is on top of the racing world, joining her brothers-in-law Prebble (Green Moon, 2012) and McEvoy (Brew, 2000) as winners of the Melbourne Cup, becoming a racing trailblazer, as the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.
