Strickland and Scannell announce Irish squads for Luxembourg tournament

The Head Coaches for the Ireland Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s teams, Pete Strickland and Mark Scannell, have today announced the squads that will travel to Luxembourg this weekend to play the hosts in a friendly tournament.

The Irish Senior Men’s team will play two games against Luxembourg in Coque National Centre for Sport, with the first game tipping off at 8.15pm on Saturday, May 20th, and their second game on Sunday, May 21st at midday.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Coach Strickland stated: “Our Senior Men’s national team has come together solidly since convening for the first time in late April. The opportunity to now test our mettle against the Luxembourg national team comes at exactly the right time. We have selected a team of 12 – who are injury free and available to travel to Luxembourg this weekend – from our extensive Irish panel.

“We will then go on to face Wales and Scotland in the ‘Celtic Clash’ tournament in early June in Edinburgh, which will give us an opportunity to see even more of our Irish panel playing in international competitive action as we continue the process of building a team to represent Ireland in the European Championships in summer 2018.”

The Irish Senior Women’s squad meanwhile will play three games against the hosts, with the first game tipping in at 7.30pm on Friday, May 19th, Game 2 getting underway at 6pm on Saturday, May 20th and the final game tipping in at 10am on Sunday, May 21st.

Coach Scannell was also looking forward to the weekend: “These games are very important for us as we prepare for the Europeans next summer. This weekend will show us exactly where the squad currently stands and we are expecting three hard and good quality games against Luxembourg.

“From there, we will host Iceland in the ‘Mardyke Series’ in early June in Cork and Dublin, which will be another tough test for us and will help us to analyse the squad even further and plan ahead.”
