#WSportHour “Physical Literacy and Young Girls Participation in Sport”

Tuesday 7th February 9-10pm

Our next #WSportHour on Twitter will discuss “How can we better promote physical literacy to help increase participation of young girls in sport”. A topic close to Ciaran Duffy’s heart, #WSportHour hopes to highlight the importance of Physical Literacy and how we can help young girls in their physical development. Ciaran is the founder of Project Fun Direction and will sponsor our next #WSportHour, Tuesday 7th February, 9-10pm.

Many people have never heard of Physical Literary but when they do it intuitively makes sense because we all understand the importance of literacy and numeracy in early education settings. Physical literacy is really what PE should be achieving but clearly isn’t for many reasons.

Here is a short Sports Wales video which helps explain physical literacy.

It encapsulates what Project Fun Direction is all about and highlights what typically doesn’t happen with girls.

Kids age 5-8 make up the “FUNdamental” phase in Coaching Ireland’s “Lifelong Participation in Sports and Physical Activity (LISPA)” model. Here is a link to their piece on the Sport Ireland website and maybe useful reading before tuning in.

Other issues we would like to discuss on the night are:

  • Anecdotal evidence that it’s more difficult to get volunteer coaches / administrators for girls sport than boys sport.
  • The additional hurdles to participation faced by girls in disadvantaged areas over girls in more advantaged areas.
  • The role sports participation and physical activity for girl’s personal development throughout childhood and beyond.
  • The link between sports participation, educational attainment, healthy eating and better mental health.

If you would like to get involved on the night. Tune into twitter using the hashtag #WSportHour and twitter handle @ProjFunDir in your tweets, Tuesday, February 7th, 9-10 pm. Looking forward to it already !
